چکیده

● Canine visceral leishmaniasis is a severe systemic disease caused by the diphasic protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum in the Old World and L. chagasi in the New World. ● The geographical distribution of the disease is dependent on its insect vector, the sandfly Phlebotomus spp. in the Old World and Lutzomyia spp. in the New World. ● Common clinical signs are skin lesions, weight loss, anorexia, lymphadenopathy, ocular lesions, nasal bleeding, locomotory problems, and muscle atrophy. ● Chronic enteritis and renal failure are the most common cause of death. ● Frequent clinical laboratory findings are polyclonal hyperglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperprotinemia, a slight increase in liver enzymes, non-regenerative anemia and thrombocytopenia, azotemia, and creatininemia. ● The definitive diagnosis is obtained by direct observation of the parasites or serological means. ● The best available therapy today is the combined use of pentavalent antimonial agents with allopurinol. ● The prognosis for a complete cure is guarded. ● Dogs are the main reservoirs for human visceral leishmaniasis. Canine Leishmaniasis, Italy

We report the results of a survey to determine the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis and the presence of sand flies in northwestern Italy, where autochthonous foci of canine leishmaniasis have not been reported. Active foci of canine leishmaniasis were identified, which suggests that the disease is now also endemic in continental climate areas.

Autochthonous Outbreak and Expansion of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis, Uruguay

We report an outbreak of canine visceral leishmaniasis in Uruguay. Blood specimens from 11/45 dogs tested positive for Leishmania spp. Specimens of Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies were captured; typing revealed Leishmania infantum. Our findings document an expansion of visceral leishmaniasis to southern South America and risk for vectorborne transmission to humans.

Vaccines for Canine Leishmaniasis

Leishmania infantum is the obligatory intracellular parasite of mammalian macrophages and causes zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL). The presence of infected dogs as the main reservoir host of ZVL is regarded as the most important potential risk for human infection. Thus the prevention of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is essential to stop the current increase of the Mediterranean visce...
